First vs second class

The difference between the first (premium) and second (standard) class. European 1st class is very spacious. The 2nd class is in modern long distance trains is comfortable as well.

Most European trains have 1st and 2nd class cars. Some regional trains offer only 2nd class cars.

The advantages of the 1st class are the wide seats, fewer passengers and more room for everyone. The service for the passengers is better aswell.

However, the 2nd class in Europe is not necessarily bad. The seats are usually spacious as well. You cannot compare it to a plane: in trains there is always more room.

During peak times, the 2nd class is booked up quickly, whereas in the 1st class you will usually get a seat on short notice.

On night trains 1st class compartments often offer a personal toilet and shower.
