City host

On Raildude you can find options for private and free accommodation. Use the opportunity to meet locals, to exchange cultural ideas and learn more about the really interesting corners of a city. In return, you could also offer a place to sleep at your home.

Camping

The cheaper way to spend the night. But you have to keep in mind: the camp sites are usually outside of the cities and you will need public transport to reach them. You always need a a tent and an air mattress/air bed with you.
The advantages: in many small towns and on beaches, only camps sites or expensive hotels are available.
Camp sites usually also offer small houses and ready-equipped large tents. If you travel in a small group, these would be worth booking.

Hotel

The expensive option for an over-night accomodation in Europe. Hotels are starting from 40 € per room and night. The low-cost hotel chains have their hotels most likely next to roads on the outskirts of a city, not that close to the train station in the city centre. Normal hotels are always located in the city centres.

Good hotels for the whole of Europe. Book easily and quickly in advance. Including ratings of each location.

Spend the night

Information about places to spend the night. Hostels, hotels, camp sites or private accomodation.

Hostels

Hostels are very common in Europe. They are available in various categories, sizes and facilities. The price-performance ratio is usually very good. Moreover it's always a good place to meet other travellers. The staff is well informed about tourist activities, alternative events and night-life.
You can sleep in dorms with shared toilets and showers at very low prices. There are also single and double rooms available.
For the main summer season, it is recommended to book the hostels two to three days in advance. If the exact arrival date is already fixed, you should even reserve earlier than this.
The easiest way to do it is booking online (see blue box at the right).
Hostels are often located in city centres and are therefore easy to reach from the stations.

Night train

Night trains are perfect for traveling long distances while sleeping. Most overnight trains are clean and comfortable. Usually you will have to pay a reservation fee, depending on the category of the seat/bed. On the other hand, you save the money for a hostel or hotel. Some night trains have cars attached with free 2nd class seats.
The couchette cars are recommended by Raildude. Here you can spend a relatively relaxed night and the doors can be locked from the inside.
Here on Raildude, we provide you with important information about almost all European night trains: reservation fees, information and photos of the couchette and sleeping cars.

Outdoor

If you want to stay over night somewhere outdoor in the nature, you should keep certain behaviour rules in mind.
In many countries it is not allowed just to lay down somewhere to sleep. Especially on beaches in typical tourist areas, it is not recommended. Either the police will chase you away or some unpleasant people might complain.
A safer place to sleep is easy to find: get on a local train and travel a bit on the countryside. Leave the train at a small station and walk some meters to the fields and meadows to find a quiet place. Do not leave any rubbish. If you see someone, ask if you are allowed to stay.
For example in Scandinavia you have the "every man's law" which allows to stay overnight anywhere you want. But in a good distance away from houses and not on private property. You can stay for up to only one night at the same place.
However, you should not hesitate asking people. In small towns, people are usually very helpful and friendly.
