Hi, correct me if I am wrong, in the November month there is only 2 trains available from Kiruna to Narvik
and vise versa. If we take the train from Kiruna in the morning, we would reach Narvik by 1:30pm but the
next train going back to Kiruna from Narvik would be at 2:30pm ??? That means we only have less than
1 hour to explore Narvik if we were to catch the next train out of Narvik on the same day back to Kiruna.

Yes, that's correct...
You will arrive at 13:43h and you have to return at 14:40h.
There are not that much humans living in this area, so there are only two trains per day.
But the nature is amazing on Kiruna-Narvik. Narvik isn't that special.
So you would do this trip for the scenic view, not for the stop in Narvik.

Yes it would be better then to travel from Stockholm directly to Narvik and then return to Kiruna.
But that's right... you would have to pay for the part in Norway...

The reservation for the route Stockholm-Kiruna or Stockholm-Narvik is the same if you travel with a rail pass.
As you do not have a rail pass for Norway, you will need a standard point to point ticket from the border to Narvik.
If you book early, you get the one-way ticket for SEK 39 (~ EUR 5).
Select "Riksgränsen" to "Narvik".

Buy a "SJ STANDARD JUST NOW" ticket. You can't exchange them anymore, but they are cheaper.

I assume the SJ Standard ticket would be a 2nd class ticket ???
What would happen then ? Do we have to move out of the 1st class section
and move to the 2nd class section ?

Hi Charles.
If you come up to the North by the direct night train, you will officially have to change in Riksgränsen from your sleeper compartment to the 2nd class seats wagon. As this night train only carries normal seated wagons in 2nd class (but nice and comfortable). It is about one hour from Riksgränsen to Narvik. Of course you can ask the train staff before if you can stay in your compartment until Narvik - shouldn't be no problem as the train staff in Scandinavia is always very friendly.
If you definitely want to stay for sure and totally official in your sleeper compartment from Riksgränsen to Narvik, you have to ask in Stockholm for a ticket (or contact sj.se) as I am not sure if it is possible with the saver fare.

Hi Charles.
I've now the news that at least for the Interrail pass (the one which is valid for European travellers), the train from Stockholm to Narvik is also valid with a "Sweden pass only" on the part in Norway.
But as the structure is a bit different "Interrail One Country Pass" to "Eurail Select/Regional Pass", I am not 100% sure if it is possible as well with Eurail. So if you want to buy the ticket from the Swedish border up to Narvik and return at a station in Sweden, ask before if you can use the train for free with your Swedish Eurail Pass.
