Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Hi all. I will be getting the train from Vienna to Zagreb in the summer. Which is the most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb? Is it via Graz in Austria or via Sopron in Hungry? Do they both go through the Alps? Thanks for your help with this.

Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Postby Peter » 07 Feb 2012 - 20:49

Hi.
I recommend the one via Villach, Bled and Ljubljana.
Or Graz and Maribor.
The faster one is the one via Sopron.

as I am a bit confused about it. I would love to go through the Semmering Tunnel. Which route would I need for this? Thanks again.

Hi.
Semmering is on the route Vienna to Bruck an der Mur.
So you can use the train leaving Vienna at 1029 or 1602.
And I won't read the full article you linked to. Sorry. ;)

Whithout any doubt, the most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb you can choose is to go by train via Semmering, Graz and Maribor (SLO). Alps mountain is gorgeous and passing through narrow river-valleys too.

An excerpt from ÖBB timetable.

Hi,

for the trains "S2" you need a compulsory reservation, which is free at Slovenian stations. http://www.raildude.com/en/train-type-c ... BE-ics/151

Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Postby dan777 » 28 Mar 2012 - 17:02

Regarding tickets, I wish to get the Wien Meidling Bf 16:02 Zagreb Glavni Kolod train. Can I get my tickets for this on line in advance (I am in the U.K.) or do I have to get them at the station in Vienna?
Thanks.

Also, how much would a single ticket be? The OEBB website does not have a prce. thanks.

Hi,

you could get a regular ticket online in the Raildude shop or at the station before departure. Sadly, the special advance fare "Sparschiene" cannot be booked online on this route, only at a station...and then you would need to get it three days in advance.

Thanks for the advice. I will try and sit on the left.
Is it free seating when I buy my ticket or do I reserve a particular seat when I get my ticket?
Also, I looked on the eurorailuk website and at the raildude shop and a single ticket vienna to zagreb is over £70.00! I have seen on other websites that the price for buying the same ticket at the station is about £45.00.
Seems alot cheaper to get my ticket vienna train station. Is there a reason for this proce difference?
Are tickets likely to be sold out early?
I will be in vienna 3 days before I get the train to zagreb. What should I do?

Hi,

you can book a "Sparschiene" offer starting from 29€ one way at the station in Wien - prebooking time is 3 days so it should be sufficient if you go to a station when you arrive in Wien.
If you cannot get a Sparschiene offer you can get a regular international ticket at the station which is ~68€. Another alternative would be to get a domestic "Sparschiene" ticket online until Spielfeld-Straß (border station) for 9€/14€ plus an international ticket from there to Zagreb which would be ~30€, so 39€ in total best case. The domestic Sparschiene ticket can only be bought online at the ÖBB website, again with 3day prebooking period.

No problem! :)

And since I forgot to mention it before: Tickets and reservations are sold separately, but there is no need to book a reservation, you will certainly find a free seat.

And a technical information: if it would be possible to get access to the data of the special offer fares of ÖBB, the Raildude shop would also offer them.

Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Postby mad_atta » 18 Jun 2014 - 03:54

This is an incredibly helpful thread, thanks! :D

I'm looking into doing this route in early July, but have a couple of questions:

1) Currently the only nonstop service on this route seems to be the 16:03 departure from Vienna, arriving Zagreb 22:43. A key reason for taking this route is to enjoy the scenery, so I don't want to be missing out on any of the good bits because it's dark. I see sunset at that time of year is around 20:50, so presumably there will be twilight until close to 22:00, so it's probably only Sevnica to Zagreb where the light will really be failing. Is this a particularly scenic stretch, or should I just not worry about it?

2) If we decided to stop somewhere along the way for a few hours, perhaps for a bit of an alpine hike and/or to explore a nice town, where would anyone recommend?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi!

1) It would be no problem to take the direct train and miss out on the last stretch.
2) You could go to Semmering and hike along the railway line back to Payerbach-Reichenau to get back on the train again: http://www.semmeringbahn.at/ and http://www.semmeringbahn.at/images/Semm ... weg_14.pdf
This is not a particularly arduous hike but suited well to fit in a day trip from Vienna to Zagreb. A longer hike would be to Rax mountain located in the same area; a bit more south you could have a look into "Bärenschützklamm".
Best city to visit in between probably would be my home town Graz.

Most scenic route between Vienna and Zagreb?

Postby travelbug » 03 Sep 2014 - 16:45

Hi. I am just new to this site, but found this post very interesting. I will be in travelling from Split up to Vienna in May 2015 with partner and my 9 yr old son, so checking out interesting and scenic routes by train. I see there is a train from Split to Zagreb.... so far so good.
From there it would be nice to take a couple of days to reach Vienna. I've read all the previous posts with various spectacular :king: route suggestions, but they all mention Vienna to Zagreb. How can I find out about the reverse travel; ie timetables, pre-booking and "Sparschiene" tickets if possible. Can I book from Australia or should I wait til I am in Croatia and pay in local currency? Any suggestions welcome.
thanks
